As he regained revenge over Leon Spinks, Muhammad Ali unleashed his magic one last time. Leon Spinks could not stop Muhammad Ali from making history as “The Greatest” won the world heavyweight title for the third time.
In front of the biggest crowd ever gathered for a live boxing match, Ali claimed his place in boxing history as one of the “Greatest Fighters of All Time”.
The almost 70,000 fans crammed into the New Orleans Superdome felt that something magical was in the air, and Ali did not disappoint. As he won a clear decision in a better fight than one might remember, he was sprightlier than he’d been in years.
There was utter chaos in Leon Spinks’ corner, with screams of conflicting advice coming from all sides. The sixth was the last straw for disgusted strategist George Benton, who stormed off.
Despite Muhammad Ali’s previous loss, which was hailed by The Ring magazine as the upset of the year, it was hard to tell that he had lost.
There wasn’t a jot of doubt in Ali’s mind before the championship fight on Sept. 15, 1978. He made it seem as if his February loss was all a part of the plan.
When he reclaimed the title, Ali made history by becoming the first man to win the heavyweight championship three times.
After the fight, Ali retired from boxing in 1979 — for the first time. Ali retired with a record of 56 wins, 37 of those by knockouts, and five losses.
