Wearing only…Cleto Reyes Boxing Gloves

In the history of boxing, Muhamad Ali has been regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, from ‘The Rumble in the Jungle‘ to ‘Thrilla in Manilla‘.

With his swift revenge, Ali regained the title from the hands of Leon Spinks. As the first boxer to win the world title three times, Ali secured the victory in the Superdome in New Orleans with the largest indoor audience for a boxing match. The crowd of 63,350 was the largest indoor attendance for a boxing match in history.

The fight between Ali and Spinks for the undisputed heavyweight title took place in Las Vegas on Feb. 15, 1978, seven months before the Superdome fight. The fight between Ali and Spinks for the undisputed heavyweight title took place in Las Vegas on Feb. 15, 1978, seven months before the Superdome fight. Spinks became the second man to defeat Ali in a title match despite having only seven professional fights on his record.

I want you to know I’m really serious about this fight,” Ali said. “Put your money on me. I cannot get no better.”

Ali’s confidence was unwavering prior to his championship fight on Sept. 15, 1978. The way he explained his February loss, it seemed like everything was on schedule. Ali, who was 11 years older than Spinks, was a veteran compared to Spinks, who was 11 years younger.

“Do you know if I beat him the first time, I wouldn’t of got no credit for it,” said Ali. “He only had seven fights … the kid was nothing … so I’m glad he won. It’s a perfect scene. You couldn’t write a better movie than this. This is it. Just what I need. Competition. Fighting odds. Can the old champ regain his title for the third time? Think of it. A third time. Do-or-die. And you know what makes me laugh? He’s the same guy. The only difference is he got eight fights now.”

In front of a record-breaking 63,350 spectators, which included former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier singing the national anthem and celebs such as Sylvester Stallone and Liza Minnelli sitting ringside, Ali, 36, beat Spinks, 25, in a unanimous (11-4, 10-4, 10-4) 15-round win. In the fifth round, Ali was penalized by referee Lucien Joubert for holding, but he dominated the match overall.

The gloves of Cleto Reyes were brought to the spotlight in this fight by Ali, He refused to wear the gloves of the sporting brand that sponsored him. He was instructed to tape over the Reyes logo to avoid jeopardizing his sponsorship deal.

But, once in the ring, Ali had his trainer rip off the tape revealing the iconic Cleto Reyes logo.

For Muhammad, the only glove worth wearing was Cleto Reyes’s boxing gloves.
