INCREASE YOUR ENDURANCE

Boxing is a really difficult sport is not all about strength and technique is also about physical condition: ENDURANCE!

One of the first things you need to increase your endurance when fighting is…

CARDIO: You need to make your heart beat faster to pump more blood to your system, this will increase your body’s oxygen absorption and that’s what your muscles need. It will help you to not run out of breath so quickly and to perform better because you will have more energy.

TECHNIQUE: We cannot forget this part, technique is fundamental. If you do the right movements if will save you energy. Technique will allow you to have better and stronger punches because you will know when to apply each movement with more precision.

MUSCLE MEMORY: It’s really simple, the more time you spend practicing a movement it gets easier and easier. If you have muscle memory your brain will store all those repeated movements that you’ve been practicing. That’s why you train all your punches, you do shadow boxing and more to get your body use to every movement.

One of the keys to success is start doing more with less, you need to save energy to prevent getting tired so soon.

The end of the year is upon us and with that the holidays. So, I thought to myself, is there any festivity around this time of year that involves boxing? Turns out, there is. Kind of.

Meet Santo Thomas, a Peruvian town 12,000 feet above sea level, and where the Takanakuy fighting festival takes place.

Life is punishing in these mountains, access to services is almost impossible because the town is extremely deep in the Peruvian Andes so people has no way to get commodities as a city or other towns could get. Not even Peruvian law jurisdiction has basically any effect in this region, so disputes had to be resolved in other ways.

The thing is that these people are fighters and in this festival, everyone fights, even the elderly and children. But, what this has anything to do with any holiday whatsoever? Well, for whatever reason this festival takes place in the early morning of Christmas; there is previous drinking and to get in the mood the several days before and in Christmas day they go at it.

Why have these kind of festival, thought? Well, as previously stated, life in those mountains is unforgiven in every aspect, so this is merely a way to blow off steam and, I guess, to have fun. There are rules, by the way; to there is legitimate notion to all this.

I can think of worse ways to spend Christmas.

Boxing gloves are a key element in the sport. Here’s what you need to know to choose the right one.

-Sparring gloves.

The purpose of these is the  protection for your hands, so they usually have extra padding, they’re not meant to hurt your opponent.  They’re weighted from 16 to 20 oz.

-Training gloves.

These are use for all training purposes, they come in a wide range of weights, sizes and colors. If you’re just starting out, you can just use these gloves for any type of training.

-Fighting/Competition gloves.

As the name implies, these are use during competition fights or events. The padding is firmer and they are designed to deliver a sharp blow. They’re mostly all laced up.  It’s best if you just use them in fights.

Make sure to check with your trainer the weight and size of your gloves. Check out our complete list of boxing gloves here:

BOXING RULES

Boxing rules can vary if the fight is amateur or professional, but there are some basic rules that if they’re broken they are considered a foul. According to Box Rec the following rules can cause a warning or disqualification if they are violated.

  • You cannot hit below the belt, hold, trip, kick, headbutt, wrestle, bite, spit on, or push your opponent.
  • You cannot hit with your head, shoulder, forearm, or elbow.
  • You cannot hit with an open glove, the inside of the glove, the wrist, the backhand, or the side of the hand.
  • You cannot punch your opponent’s back, or the back of his head or neck (rabbit punch), or on the kidneys (kidney punch).
  • You cannot throw a punch while holding on to the ropes to gain leverage.
  • You can’t hold your opponent and hit him at the same time, or duck so low that your head is below your opponent’s belt line.
  • When the referee breaks you from a clinch, you have to take a full step back; you cannot immediately hit your opponent–that’s called “hitting on the break” and is illegal.
  • You cannot spit out your mouthpiece on purpose to get a rest.
  • If you score a knockdown of your opponent, you must go to the farthest neutral corner while the referee makes the count.
  • If you “floor” your opponent, you cannot hit him when he’s on the canvas.
  • A floored boxer has up to ten seconds to get back up on his feet before losing the bout by knockout.
  • A boxer who is knocked down cannot be saved by the bell in any round, depending upon the local jurisdiction’s rules.
  • A boxer who is hit with an accidental low blow has up to five minutes to recover. If s/he cannot continue after five minutes, s/he is considered knocked out.
  • If the foul results in an injury that causes the fight to end immediately, the boxer who committed the foul is disqualified.
  • If the foul causes an injury but the bout continues, the referee orders the judges to deduct two points from the boxer who caused the injury.
  • If an unintentional foul causes the bout to be stopped immediately, the bout is ruled a “no contest” if four rounds have not been fully completed. (If the bout was scheduled for four rounds, then three rounds must have been completed.) If four rounds have been completed, the judges’ scorecards are tallied and the fighter who is ahead on points is awarded a technical decision. If the scores are even, it will be called a “technical draw.”
  • If a boxer is knocked out of the ring, he gets a count of 20 to get back in and on his feet. He cannot be assisted.
  • In some jurisdictions the standing eight-count or the three knockdown rule also may be in effect.
  • In other jurisdictions, only the referee can stop the bout.

Who is next for Andre Ward?

We just saw the rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev, their previous fight was named the best fight of the year and a complete pound for pound fight. In this rematch Ward scored and amazing eight round TKO win over Sergey Kovalev, some people say he showed more power than the first fight where he won by a close unanimous decision. He landed some amazing body shots but finally in the eighth round a decisive punch got Kovalev in trouble.

But now..what is next for Andre Ward?

He is already the best in his category, according to him he could move to cruiserweight  or even heavyweight. Another option is to unify the title and fight Adonis Stevenson who holds another belt in his weight class. Adonis Stevenson already challenged Ward to get the title unified, this is a fight a lot of fans would like to see. Who do you think Andre Ward should fight next?

After watching his fight with Jeff Horn in Australia we are all asking ourselves what should Manny Pacquiao do? Do you think he needs to retire? That maybe at 38 years old he doesn’t have the same power anymore?

Manny Pacquiao accepted his defeat and lost of the WBO title, but recently he requested to the WBO a review of  the refereeing and judging of the bout. “I love boxing, and I don’t want to see it dying because of unfair decision and officiating,” -Manny Pacquiao

The trainers of Manny Pacquiao say that the referee didn’t took the correct decisions by not stopping some head clashes that actually made two cuts to Pacquiao’s hair line and making him need stitches. What will happen with the request? For the moment we don’t know. What we do know is that the fight contract had a  rematch clause meaning that Manny Pacquiao could negotiate to fight Horn again before the end of the year.
