De La Hoya: Canelo Would Beat Mayweather ‘Easy’ in Rematch!

If Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) is looking for a massive pay-per-view fight – then Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya sees only one option – Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs).

Back in 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather dominated Canelo over twelve rounds for a decision win. Their pay-per-view broke several revenue records and generated 2.2 million purchases on pay-per-view.

Since that fight, Mayweather – who turns 40 – retired in September of 2015, but he’s teased on more than one occasion of a potential comeback.

Canelo has won six in a row and two world titles since that loss, and faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6th from Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. If a rematch were to happen, De La Hoya is confident that Canelo would not only avenge his only career defeat – but he would do it with complete ease.

“If Floyd wants to have a big fight, a huge fight, the only guy he could fight is Canelo Alvarez,” De La Hoya said to Sports Illustrated. “And I guarantee you, I believe in my heart of hearts that Canelo would probably beat him easy, maybe even knock him out”?.

Mayweather has only been mentioning one possible opponent as of late, UFC superstar Conor McGregor – a fight that De La Hoya believes will never be allowed to happen. De La Hoya says the UFC will never grant permission to their biggest company superstar to take part in a boxing match, where he is likely going to be dominated from bell to bell.

“That’ll never happen,” De La Hoya said. “The UFC will never allow it. It just will not happen. Why would they let the biggest star, McGregor, go up in the ring just straight boxing? Mayweather would probably outclass him. It would be a boring boxing match. Easy as that. Why would the UFC allow that?
