Today we pay tribute to those who exchanged their rifles for boxing gloves. Here you will find the names of a few that went into the military and continued their fights in the boxing arenas.
Joe Louis: Joe Louis was born on May 13, 1914, in Alabama, United States. He was the first black American to win the world heavyweight title. Known as “The Brown Bomber,” he was one of the most dominant fighters in history and a symbol of hope.
Jack Dempsey:
Dempsey was born in 1895 in Manassa, Colorado. He was a military man who served in World War I and World War II. After the war, he became a professional boxer and won the world heavyweight championship. He is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
Ken Norton Sr.:
From 1973 to 1976, Norton held the World Heavyweight title. He was also a military veteran and served in the Korean War.
Rocky Marciano:
Marciano was born in Brockton, Massachusetts on September 1, 1923. He was the son of Italian immigrants and grew up in a tough neighborhood. He served in the military during World War II and then became a legendary professional boxer.
Leon Spinks:
Served in the Marine Corps. Throughout his career, Spinks held the record for the youngest heavyweight champion in history at the age of only 26. He was also the first man to win a heavyweight title as a result of winning an Olympic gold medal.
Jamel Herring:
Herring is a former Marine Corps boxer who now fights professionally. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.
